I have not experienced the endless search or a blue screen of death since. From my post in uberbleeper's thread: "I don't think Vista users will see a permanent solution for these slow Windows Updates unless Microsoft either purges some of the outdated (superseded) updates I couldn't get the patches to install as they invoked the Update Service and went into the long (forever?) loop. http://pspdesktops.com/windows-update/windows-update-10.html Additional launches = additional hung processes.

Thank you! Finally found this page and it helped me fix the problem. To start the service, repeat the process and right-click on wuauserv and select Start Service. For me it was the solution, the OP didn't show his specs (quad-core 8gb pc).
